Professional Group: All contestants of all nationalities.

Category A: 9 – 13 years old

Category B: 14 – 17 years old

Category C: 18 years old or older

Non-Professional Group: All contestants of all nationalities, who are not formally majoring in Piano at professional music institutions including Conservatories of Music, Music Academies, Culture and Arts Colleges or Universities offering Piano major.

Category A: under 8 years old

Category B: 9 – 14 years old

Category C: 15 years old or older

– Contestants choose 1 among 2 groups to register for the competition.

– Age eligibility is determined based on the contestant’s age as of June 19, 2024 (the deadline for contestants to submit his/her video clips for the Preliminary Round).

3. Proceedings

– Preliminary Round (online): Contestants record a video clip of their piano recital and submit it to the Organizing Committee via the account provided by the Organizing Committee.

– Semi-Final and Final Round: Live performances at Dien Hong Theater – Đông A Hall – Thaodien Campus, The Saigon International University (18 Tong Huu Dinh, Thao Dien Ward, Thu Duc City, HCMC).

– Contestants from Category B and C of the Professional Group advancing to the Final Round rehearse and perform with the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra at Dien Hong Theater – Đông A Hall – Thaodien Campus, The Saigon International University ( 18 Tong Huu Dinh, Thao Dien Ward, Thu Duc City, HCMC). The contestant selects the 1st Movement of one of the Concertos prescribed in section 7.3, and provides the Organizing Committee and Orchestra with the metronome speed.

4. Rules regarding compositions
4.1. General rules regarding compositions

– Original piano works from classical repertoire; excluding compositions in Jazz, Blue, Broadway, semi-classical, or light music style.

– All repertoires must be played from memory without sheet music.

– Do not repeat any section of the piece.

– Contestants are not allowed to change their repertoire after registration.

– The duration of each piece must be written down in the registration form.

– Contestants from Category B and Category C of the Professional Group competing in the Final Round are required to provide the Organizing Committee and the Symphony Orchestra with the metronome speed of his/her registered Concerto.

– Contestants may choose the Etude from an advanced category.

Eg: Contestants in Category A may choose Etudes from Category B or Category C.

5.2. Semi-Final Round:

– Contestants compete live at SIU.

The number of contestants advanced to the semi-final round shall be at the Professional Jury’s discretion.

– 01 contestant of each group/category (who has the highest score) voted by the Netizen will advance to the Final Round. In case the contestant (who has the highest score) voted by the Netizen is also selected by the Professional Jury to advance to the Final Round, the Professional Jury will select another contestant with the next highest score (according to the Jury’s evaluation) to advance to the Final round.

5.3. Final Round:

– Contestants under Category B & C of Professional Group will rehearse with the Symphony Orchestra of Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Art Advisor, Orchestra Conductor, Meritorious Artist. Tran Vuong Thach. Contestants select the 1st Movement of one of the following concertos and provide the Organizing Committee and the Orchestra with the metronome speed:

7. Contest criteria

– Understanding of the composer’s style and musical language;

– Expressing the composition’s artistic content and technical requirements;

– Demonstrate your individual musicality and performance style.

8. Contest rules

– Piano to be used in Semi-Final and Final Rounds: Fazioli F278 provided by SIU.

– All repertoires must be played from memory without sheet music.

– Contestants must comply with the rules on time limit. The jury reserves the right to interrupt a performance if it exceeds the time limit.

– Contestants are responsible for his/her own practice, except for the rehearsal for the contestants from the Category B & C of the Professional Group with the Symphony Orchestra, scheduled before the Final Round and announced by the Organizing Committee.

– Contestants who won the Gold Award of the first season of the 2022 SIU Piano Competition are not allowed to compete in the same category that he/she won the prizes (Contestants must participate in a more advanced category if his/her age meets the prescribed age).

– Any documentations, videos, etc. submitted for or related to the competition will not be returned to any individual/organization.

– The Organizing Committee reserves the rights to record audibly and visually at any time during the competition and hold the rights to these records. Contestants shall not benefit from any royalty or commission from their performances.

– Upon entering the competition, the contestants agree that the Organizing Committee reserve the rights to publish, release submitted records and images as well as documentation pertaining to other activities for commercial purposes. The Organizing Committee may edit and crop the contestants’ photos for commercial purposes, such as publication on media outlets.

– Contestants shall provide for accommodation and transportation themselves during the span of the Semi-Final and the Final rounds.

– Contestants are responsible for participating in all activities before, during and after the competition as requested by the Organizing Committee.

– During preparation for the Final Round, contestants are required to appear in a video clip filmed at SIU’s campus, introducing their musical style and direction. The video clip shall be broadcast on information channels & social networking platforms selected by the Organizing Committee.

– Contestants and their relatives/friends… are not allowed to livestream their or other contestants’ performance on any social networking platforms. Contestants, relatives, and audiences may follow all the performances via the competition’s official channels.

– Contestants and audiences are not allowed to film or take photos… which may affect other contestants’ performance and the theater.

– Candidates must wear formal attire. Informal attire (such as jeans, flip-flops, shorts, miniskirts, tank tops, t-shirts, etc.) is strictly prohibited.

– The Professional Jury has the right not to award any prizes in the Final Round.

– Contestants must comply with the rules, regulations, and plans of the competition.

– There is no exception to the rules.

– The Professional Jury has the final decision on disputed matters.

7. Contest criteria

– Understanding of the composer’s style and musical language;

– Expressing the composition’s artistic content and technical requirements;

– Demonstrate your individual musicality and performance style.

8. Contest rules

– Piano to be used in Semi-Final and Final Rounds: Fazioli F278 provided by SIU.

– All repertoires must be played from memory without sheet music.

– Contestants must comply with the rules on time limit. The jury reserves the right to interrupt a performance if it exceeds the time limit.

– Contestants are responsible for his/her own practice, except for the rehearsal for the contestants from the Category B & C of the Professional Group with the Symphony Orchestra, scheduled before the Final Round and announced by the Organizing Committee.

– Contestants who won the Gold Award of the first season of the 2022 SIU Piano Competition are not allowed to compete in the same category that he/she won the prizes (Contestants must participate in a more advanced category if his/her age meets the prescribed age).

– Any documentations, videos, etc. submitted for or related to the competition will not be returned to any individual/organization.

– The Organizing Committee reserves the rights to record audibly and visually at any time during the competition and hold the rights to these records. Contestants shall not benefit from any royalty or commission from their performances.

– Upon entering the competition, the contestants agree that the Organizing Committee reserve the rights to publish, release submitted records and images as well as documentation pertaining to other activities for commercial purposes. The Organizing Committee may edit and crop the contestants’ photos for commercial purposes, such as publication on media outlets.

– Contestants shall provide for accommodation and transportation themselves during the span of the Semi-Final and the Final rounds.

– Contestants are responsible for participating in all activities before, during and after the competition as requested by the Organizing Committee.

– During preparation for the Final Round, contestants are required to appear in a video clip filmed at SIU’s campus, introducing their musical style and direction. The video clip shall be broadcast on information channels & social networking platforms selected by the Organizing Committee.

– Contestants and their relatives/friends… are not allowed to livestream their or other contestants’ performance on any social networking platforms. Contestants, relatives, and audiences may follow all the performances via the competition’s official channels.

– Contestants and audiences are not allowed to film or take photos… which may affect other contestants’ performance and the theater.

– Candidates must wear formal attire. Informal attire (such as jeans, flip-flops, shorts, miniskirts, tank tops, t-shirts, etc.) is strictly prohibited.

– The Professional Jury has the right not to award any prizes in the Final Round.

– Contestants must comply with the rules, regulations, and plans of the competition.

– There is no exception to the rules.

– The Professional Jury has the final decision on disputed matters.
